As the number of patients with age related macular degeneration or ARMD, I felt compelled to look for solutions to this impending epidemic of vision loss. ARMD has genetic, nutritional as well as environmental risk factors. The medical community is now aware that a lifetime of exposure to harmful ultraviolet, as well as blue light, contributes to ARMD. There are 3 groups of people who are at significantly higher risk to blue light exposure. These groups include children under the age of 18, people who have had cataract surgery, and those who have a strong family history of ARMD. What is harmful about blue light? Blue light is in the spectrum between ultraviolet light and other visible light. The eye does not have an adequate filter for these wavelengths. Therefore, over exposure can lead to oxidative damage to the macula pigment density. A decrease in the macula pigment density is a leading cause of ARMD. What are sources of blue light? In addition to the sun, fluorescent and the newer halogen light bulbs, computer screens, tablets, IPads, cell phones, etc. all emit a high amount of blue light and at a much closer distance. Also, blue light exposure within 2 hours of bedtime has been linked to less restful sleep and decreased school and work performance due to the adverse effects on melanin production and normal sleep patterns. What can one do to protect your eyes from this harmful blue light?
BluTech lenses have the proper balance of ocular lens pigment and melanin to give your eyes the best defense against these harmful light spectrums without distorting your normal depth perception and color vision. BluTech lenses will also improve your night vision and contrast while reducing glare. In addition to protecting your eyes from these harmful effects, BluTech lenses are also helpful in improving melatonin production and sleep patterns.
Above all else there is no other lens on the market that has been able to infuse the perfect balance of protective pigment where there is not a color perception loss and they use an impact resistant material. We have met with the staff at BluTech at length to ensure that our patients are getting the best in patient care. Additionally the staff and myself utilize the technology and have seen a drastic improvement in our overall health! We believe in the BluTech solution.
